A Modern, Thriving Society · 6 min read

Many people in the UK enjoy gardening, and the Chelsea Flower Show is a famous annual event. Shopping, cinema, eating out and visiting the countryside are popular leisure activities.

Traditional foods differ across the UK: roast beef with Yorkshire puddings and fish and chips in England; haggis (a sheep’s stomach stuffed with offal, suet, onions and oatmeal) in Scotland; Welsh cakes in Wales; and the Ulster fry in Northern Ireland.

Pubs are an important part of social life. You must be 18 to buy alcohol, though people aged 16 or over can drink wine or beer with a meal in a hotel or restaurant when accompanied by an adult.

The National Trust is a charity founded in 1895 by three volunteers. It works to preserve important buildings, coastline and countryside. In Scotland, the National Trust for Scotland does similar work.

Anyone who watches or records television as it is broadcast must have a TV licence. One licence covers all equipment in one home.
